We’ll begin Wednesday’s class reviewing the first/second draft of your Social Issue blog entries and “My Desk” homework assignments.

In our final class on Thursday we will have the final exam.  There are three parts to the exam.

Part A – Internet Search / Part B - Formal Email Writing / Part C – Blog Post Paragraph

Week 14 – Social Issues, Photo, Quiz Review

Homework

This week in class we will review your answers to the social issues handout.  Your answers will help you write a first draft of the blog post.  After discussing  your answers, we will divide into two small groups to discuss the issue you find most  interesting in greater detail.

Blog Post –  Post a photo of your desk to your blog and title it “My Desk”

Blog Post and First Draft of your Social Issue  due by the end of Thursday’s class.

Week 13 – Advice/Suggestions and Social Issues (Outline)

1. Homework - Letter of Apology and Advice/Suggestion Handout

This week, we’ll finish writing formal emails.  Once we have reviewed your letters of apology, refer to the Advice/Suggestion handouts.  Briefly sketch an outline and review the formal vocabulary you’ll use in the letter.

2. Blog Post Assignment – Part 1 – Refer to the Outline Handout

Write about a social issue that concerns you.  Some of the questions you may want to consider are; What it is?  Why is it important? Who does it affect?  What are some of the problems the issue raises?  What are some of the different points of view towards the issue?  Why are you interested in this social issue? Provide links, photos and video to better illustrate your description.

Here are some examples of social issues, one of which you may wish to write about.  These are only suggestions to get you started.

*The Environment *Gender *Sports/Health and Leisure  *Education  *Marriage/Divorce *Unemployment/Underemployed Part-time workers  *Vegetarianism  *North Korean Refugees *Military Service*The Elderly  *The Disabled  *Child Abuse *Suicide *Capital Punishment  *Juvenile Crime *Health/Disease/Viruses *Government Relocation/ Sejong City *

 

Can you think of any other examples of interesting or important social issues affecting the entire world? What are some of the most important social issues affecting Korea these days? Are you directly affected by any  social issues? What are five web sites that deal with the social issue you are writing about?

Week 12 – Complaints, Apologies and Requests

Homework – Letter of Complaint and Email Interview

We’ll take a few minutes at the beginning of Wednesday’s class to review the email interviews.  Read your classmate’s blog interview about you.  Please leave a comment if you are happy with the interview or if you find any mistakes or inaccuracies.

As well, lets review the style and vocabulary of your letters of complaint.  How can you improve your letters?  Were they informative? Did you correctly explain your problem and make appropriate demands?

Due Date:  (1) Apologies handout due for Thursday November 19th. (2) Letter of Apology should be emailed to your classmate and CC’d to me in class on Wednesday.  (3) Complete Advice/Suggestion handout (Part A, C and D)  by Wednesday. November 25, 2009

Homework Review - Email Assignment 1 – Email Interviews

Hopefully you have completed the first series of email exchanges in which you  interviewed a classmate.  If you didn’t, please make sure to talk to me so we can help you catch up.

This week we will review some useful words and phrases used in writing formal emails.

Homework – (1) Complaints handout due for Thursday November 12th.   (2) Apologies handout is due for Wednesday November 18th. (3) The first or second draft of your interview with a classmate is due Wednesday November 18th.

Week 10 – Midterm/Homework Review and Email

Midterm / Homework Review

We will take a quick look at last weeks midterm questions and I will give you feedback on your midterm blog post, “I Can’t Live Without My ____”.  Then, we’ll review some examples of the interviews you have posted to your blogs.

Email Assignment 1 – Email Interviews

This week’s assignment will begin in class.  In a series of email exchanges, you will interview an assigned classmate.  A handout will be given in class explaining what you’ll have to do.

Homework – First draft of email interview is due next Wednesday, November 11.   As well, please rewrite your midterm exam paragraph “D” as soon as possible.

Week 9 – Homework Review and Midterm!!!

Homework Review

For Wednesday’s class you had to complete a first draft paragraph interview with a classmate and  a first draft paragraph about your favorite English language blogs. As well, we will examine your latest post describing your dream vacation.

Midterm Exam

Your exam will be in class on Thursday October 29 at 9am.  There are four parts to the exam.

(A) Internet Vocabulary

(B) Internet Search (20 minutes)

(C) Proof Reading

(D) Blog Writing

Homework

Post the 2nd draft of your paragraphs describing your favorite blog and your interview with a classmate.
